St. Maarten has gotten a big reputation for restaurants, hotels, and energetic nightlife. Sep 11

For an island with a big reputation for restaurants, hotels, and energetic nightlife, St. Maarten is small — only 96 sq. km (37 sq. miles), about half the area of Washington, D.C. An island divided between the Netherlands and France, St. Maarten (Sint Maarten) is the Dutch half, and St. Martin is French. Legend has it that a gin-drinking Dutchman and a wine-guzzling Frenchman walked around the island to see how much territory each could earmark for his country in a day; the Frenchman walked farther, but the canny Dutchman got the more valuable piece of property.

The divided island is the smallest territory in the world shared by two sovereign states. The only way you’ll know you’re crossing an international border is when you see the sign BIENVENUE PARTIE FRANCAISE, attesting to the peaceful coexistence between the two nations. The island was officially split in 1648, and many visitors still ascend Mount Concordia, near the border, where the agreement was reached. Even so, St. Maarten changed hands 16 times before it became permanently Dutch.

Returning visitors who haven’t been to the island for a while are often shocked when they see today’s St. Maarten. No longer a sleepy Caribbean backwater, now it’s a boomtown. Duty-free shopping has turned the island into a virtual mall, and the Dutch capital, Philipsburg, is often bustling with cruise-ship hordes.

Although the island’s 39 white-sand beaches remain unspoiled, much has been lost to the bulldozer on St. Maarten. This is not a place for people who don’t like crowds, so if you want to get away from it all, head to the nearby Dutch islands of St. Eustatius (Statia) and Saba, or choose another getaway, such as the British Virgin Islands. Even the French side of the island would suit you better. Nevertheless, despite problems like crime, occasional storms, traffic congestion, and corruption, St. Maarten continues to attract massive numbers of visitors who want a Caribbean island vacation with a splash of Las Vegas.

The Dutch capital, Philipsburg, curves like a toy village along Great Bay. The town lies on a narrow sand isthmus separating Great Bay and the Great Salt Pond. Commander John Philips, a Scot in Dutch employ, founded the capital in 1763. To protect Great Bay, Fort Amsterdam was built in 1737.

The French side of the island has a slightly different character. It’s been undergoing a building boom of late, with lots of new hotels opening, but for now at least, it’s still sleepier than the Dutch side. Most hotels tend to be quieter and more secluded than their Dutch counterparts, and you won’t be overwhelmed with cruise-ship crowds. There are no dazzling sights, and there’s no spectacular nightlife. Even the sports scene on St. Martin isn’t as well organized as on many Caribbean islands (though the Dutch side has golf and other diversions). Most people come to St. Martin to relax on its many white-sand beaches and to experience “France in the Tropics.”

French St. Martin has a distinctly French air. Police officers, for example, wear képis. The towns have names like Colombier and Orléans, the streets are rues, and the French flag flies over the gendarmerie in Marigot, the capital. It also has some of the best cuisine in the Caribbean, with an extraordinary number of good bistros and restaurants. Advocates cite French St. Martin as distinctly more sophisticated, prosperous, stylish, and cosmopolitan than its neighboring départements d’outre-mer, Guadeloupe and Martinique.

French St. Martin is governed from Guadeloupe and has direct representation in the government in Paris. The principal town on the French side is Marigot, the seat of the subprefect and municipal council.

Marigot is not quite the same size as its counterpart, Philipsburg, in the Dutch sector. It has none of the frenzied pace of Philipsburg, which is often overrun with cruise-ship passengers. In fact, Marigot looks like a French village transplanted to the Caribbean. If you climb the hill over this tiny port, you’ll be rewarded with a view from the old fort.

About 20 minutes by car beyond Marigot is Grand-Case, a small fishing village that’s an outpost of French civilization, with many good restaurants and a few places to stay.

Category 4 Hurricane Bill passes St Maarten Aug 21

PHILIPSBURG–Powerful Category 4 Hurricane Bill passed more than 300 miles Northeast of St. Maarten late last night through early this morning, but its winds were powerful enough to cause moments of anxiety in Philipsburg.

While, generally, residents had breathed a collective sigh of relief earlier in the day as Bill finally made its turn towards the Northwest and away from the island, by 8:30pm, coinciding with a brief but heavy downpour, high sea swells started to have devastating effects along some sections of the coastline.

This was especially noticeable in the Philipsburg area at Foot of Town and along the Great Bay beach promenade (the boardwalk) where heavy-duty equipment had to be used to dump sand to prevent sea water from flowing onto Front Street.

About half of the open beach-front lot adjacent to Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort, which is often used as a parking area or for picnics, was flooded and water from the sea was seen gushing into the nearby canal and flowing into Fresh Pond.

In their bid to stop water from flowing onto Front Street, an emergency crew used heavy equipment to dump sand at the beach-side entrances to Armenhuissteeg and Sisalsteeg, both of which were flooded.

The island did not record any long periods of sustained heavy winds as the storm passed at a distance far enough to keep the island outside of its tropical storm force winds. However, high sea swells were recorded in Cay Bay, Pelican, Great Bay, Mullet Bay, the Northern half of the island and other areas throughout most of the day.

As was expected, the heavy swells dumped a lot of sand in places such as Beacon Hill Road and along the promenade, including in the vicinity of Captain Hodge Wharf.

Utility company GEBE did not report any problems with seaweed or high waves during the course of the day and an assessment is expected to be made today of the power plant facility.

Eight divers were involved in a mishap at sea during the day which was believed to have been related to the deteriorating sea conditions associated with the passing of the storm.

At 11:00pm Wednesday, as Hurricane Bill continued to move Northwest and passed Northeast of the local islands, its centre was located near 20.7 degrees North and 58.9 degrees West or about 315 miles Northeast of St. Maarten. The system was moving Northwest near 17mph with maximum sustained winds near 135mph, making Bill a dangerous Category 4 storm.

However, the EOC stressed that residents living along coastal areas should be vigilant, as hazardous conditions are possible along North- and East-facing shores due to large breaking waves.

It said areas that might be subjected to high seas are Oyster Pond, Guana Bay, Point Blanche, Beacon Hill/airport area, Simpson Bay area, and the Philipsburg/Great Bay beach promenade. Coastal roads may become impassable due to the sea washing sand on the road and motorists should therefore exercise caution.

Also, the Meteorological Service of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba has issued a small craft advisory and a high surf warning. Both will remain in effect until further notice.

St. Maarten still Disney Cruise line preferred destination. Jul 20

POINTE BLANCHE–St. Maarten remains a popular and preferred destination of Disney Cruise Line passengers, President Karl Holz said during a recent visit here. He promised to work closer with the destination to increase passenger numbers and to bring smiles to local children’s faces with more visits by Disney characters to schools.

Holz toured Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise and Cargo Facilities and had a look at the expansion that is in progress. He also had an island tour to get a taste of what his passengers see when they disembark here.

The cruise line president suggested more emphasis be placed on local heroes and heroines and their role in the island’s development – a feature Disney and especially its young passengers are interested in.

Disney is busy with two new ships: Disney Dream (2011) and Disney Fantasy (2012) which will each have a passenger capacity of 4,000. These ships are expected to have Caribbean itineraries with possible calls to St. Maarten.

St. Maarten’s 5th Annual Boardwalk May 18

moko_jumbiesThe high spirited and energetic performances of the Sandy Point-based Chagredandies Moko Jumbie group are preparing to travel to St. Maarten for the 5th Annual Boardwalk.

The event, slated for May 16 this year, celebrates St Maarten’s traditional festive culture with marching bands, masquerades, carnival royals, martial arts, moko jumbies, and dance-theatre along the Great Bay Beach promenade.

The Moko Jumbies are extremely popular in the Dutch territory and have become regulars at the annual celebrations having represented the twin-island Federation at four of the five festivals. The moko jumbie traditional dance originated in Africa as did many other folklore customs.

The Invitational St.Maarten-St.Martin Classic Yacht Regatta 2009 Nov 14

The schedule has now been finalized by the West Indies Events and the St.Maarten-St.Martin Classic Yacht Regatta Foundation for the upcoming January regatta. The Invitational St.Maarten-St.Martin Classic Yacht Regatta 2009, January 22 – 25, is the first classic regatta of the Caribbean season, with the Grenada Classic Yacht Regatta the second one (February 19 – 22), followed by Antigua Classics, April 16 – 21. West Indies Events is also in the process of establishing a classic regatta in Curacao and in Cuba.

The upcoming St.Maarten-St.Martin January regatta and all social events will be moved from Simpson Bay to Great Bay. By relocating to Great Bay, yachts will not have to enter the lagoon and are not subject to paying the high fees, no extra bridge openings will be needed and the participants can come to the Bobby’s Marina docks or go on anchor right after the races. The existing marina is expanding with a 30 slip mega yacht marina and a 112 condominium and shopping complex. Classic and Vintage Yachts, Schooners and Spirit of Tradition yachts will be accommodated for free on the Bobby’s Marina docks (subject to availability) and will also again receive complimentary docking on Friday afternoon and overnight at Fort Louis Marina in Marigot.

September to be quite active with five named storms according to forecasters Sep 05

GREAT BAY, St. Maarten – On September 2 Colorado State University hurricane forecasters Phil Klotzbach and William Gray came out with their September month prediction and pointed out that September will bring above-average activity with five named storms making it a quite active month.

Four of the five storms will become hurricanes with two reaching major hurricane status with winds over 111 miles per hour.

Currently there are three storm systems in the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean area, namely Tropical Storm Hanna, Ike and Josephine.

“Tropical Storm Ike according to weather forecasting models is expected to pass well North of the North Eastern Caribbean islands which includes St. Maarten, but it’s too soon to be sure, and therefore residents should continue to pay attention and monitor weather reports.

“We must be mindful of the fact that we are only half way through the 2008 hurricane season. We must therefore remain alert and prepared,” Chairman of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Governor Franklyn Richards told the Government Information Service (GIS) on Wednesday.

Governor Richards reminds residents to be prepared as the 2008 hurricane season continues to become more active. “These storm systems are forming very quickly one behind the next and one may not have much time to take the appropriate measures to protect their home and business.

“You are once again urged to clean up anything around your yards that could become airborne and make sure your disaster plan is in place and your disaster kit has at least three days of supplies (eg water, canned food etc),” EOC Chairman Governor Richards once again reiterated.

Tropical storm systems that have already formed for the season are Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly, Edouard, Fay and Gustav. June and July were very active, with three named storms forming during the two-month period: Bertha, Cristobal and Dolly.

Bertha became the longest-lived July storm on record. August had slightly above-average activity, largely because of Hurricane Gustav according to Colorado State University forecasters.

The hurricane season runs through November 30.

Increase in yachts entering St Maarten’s lagoon Aug 28

SIMPSON BAY–Amidst outcry from St. Maarten Maritime Trade Association (SMMTA) that the new harbour and port fees implemented on January 1 are driving yachts away to less expensive destinations, a slight increase in the number of transiting boats entering the lagoon has been recorded for the first seven months of this year.

Simpson Bay Lagoon Authority Corporation (SLAC) reported this week that 8,504 vessels of varying sizes had visited the island from January to July, compared to 8,445 during the same period last year.

The figures suggest that the lagoon is becoming quite crowded, because no new marinas or berthing slips have been added in recent years, said SLAC Managing Director Russell Voges. Many times, especially during the season, larger vessels have had to anchor in Simpson Bay awaiting their turn to dock in a marina.

According to SLAC, a survey of businesses bordering the lagoon indicated that the last season was highly successful with annual sale growth in the double digits for most companies.

However, according to SMMTA, this coming season is already shaping up to be a bleak one with major marinas recording a 30 per cent drop in bookings – a development believed to be linked directly to the more than 300 per cent harbour/port fee increase. This drop, they predict, will ripple throughout the local economy affecting hundreds of jobs at marinas, restaurants and other businesses.

The new fees took effect on New Year’s Day and caught captains and owners unaware because no prior notice had been given and the increases had not been discussed with stakeholders.

SMMTA is outraged by the new fees that require vessels to pay a weekly fee even if they stay here for only one day. This reportedly has had a devastating impact on the charter yachting business.

In a full page advertisement, the association points out that stakeholders in the industry are angered not so much about the fee increase, but by the way in which it was implemented. “The fees were increased so suddenly, and without any advance notice to the yachting public, that many vessels returned to St. Maarten after a few days only to find massive increases.”

Further, “this has left many in the yachting industry feeling both understandably bitter and betrayed. Many vessels had no choice but to remain here for the rest of the season due to prior commitments, but the results are now plain for all to see with the current exodus of yachts of all sizes to French St. Martin, Antigua, or St. Thomas, whose fees are still less than half of those in St. Maarten.”

A reevaluation and thoughtful reappraisal of these fees is being called for with government and SLAC requested to consider the alternative fee proposal made by the association in April.

“We ask for a rational and fair implementation of fees across all marine industries and a rapid and sustained public relations effort to repair the damage already done to the last nine years of strong growth and investment on the island,” SMMTA said.

Classic Yacht Regatta St.Maarten – St.Martin Aug 11

West Indies Events and the St.Maarten-St.Martin Classic Yacht Regatta Foundation are inviting all Tall Ships to come to St.Maarten in January 2009.

A special course for those large vessels has been added in the fourth classic regatta which will be held during the third week of January.

The Tall ships will not have to pay a fee to participate in the St.Maarten-St.Martin Classic Yacht Regatta.

Tall ships like the Stad Amsterdam and the Star Clipper Ships have shown interest to participate already in previous years. The 245 ft (75.5 m) long Canadian build and based barquentine “Caledonia” is the first ship that has registered and the organization hopes to attract many more.Caledonia carries 1,579 square meters of sail and has 32 guest cabins and 22 crew.

The fourth Invitational St.Maarten-St.Martin Classic Yacht Regatta 2009 kicks off on Thursday January 22nd with a skippers briefing and official openings ceremony.

Effective sailing starts the next day on Friday January 23rd from Great Bay to Marigot where the yachts will be complimentary hosted like the previous years at Fort Louis Marina.

Saturday will be the special Tall Ships Day when all classics and the Tall Ships will start out of the bay in Marigot St.Martin and sail towards the finish line in Great Bay.

Organizers received the authorization from the Sint Maarten Port Authorities to dock the Tall Ships at the Pointe Blanche cruise ship pier so that passengers can disembark and an on board VIP reception can be held after the regatta that Saturday evening.

The general public will have the possibility to visit the ships on Sunday morning while they are in Great Bay.

The regular schooners, vintage, spirit of tradition and classic yachts in the regatta will set sail again that Sunday morning for the last regatta day towards Anguilla and return to the finish in Great Bay in the afternoon.
